“This is where we met,” he said, as his hands wrapped themselves around the ceramic mug, bringing it closer to him as he cast his eyes down on the brackish liquid frothing in its confines. She smiled, nodding her head and scanning the empty little restaurant, her long fingers idly tearing up the paper napkin she was clutching in her hands.
“Yup,” she said. “I remember it very well.” He chuckled, finally moving his attention from the coffee to her face, biting her lower lip as her eyes settled on the dusty breakfast bar. “You were sitting right there,” she continued, pointing her finger at the third seat in. “Drinking coffee just like you are now.” She looked back at him and grinned.
“And you,” he said, smirking, pointing his finger at an empty table with four matching chairs. “were sitting right there picking at your napkin, just like you are now.” A hint of color flushed in her cheeks and his breath caught in his throat. She gave him a playful scowl.
“At least I wasn’t staring at you like some sort of creep,” she commented. “I felt you staring at me for a good two minutes before I looked back at you.” He rolled his eyes, taking a sip of his coffee and scrunching his nose at the bitter taste, or perhaps the embarrassing memory.
“You looked back though,” he retorted, and she mimicked him and rolled her eyes.
“And then you looked away, trying to play it off all cool,” she snickered. He laughed and set the coffee mug aside, reaching out for her hands that were picking at the scattered remains of the torn napkin. He held them in his and ran his thumb against her palm. She could feel her heart beating a million miles a second.
“But you smiled,” he whispered, looking up at her through his eyelashes. “I will always remember that you smiled at me.” She bit her bottom lip, letting the memory embrace her: her matted hair, the smell of the rain from outside lingering in the dusty restaurant, the feeling of a pair of eyes on her form, looking up to see him for the first time and having time slow down.
“That’s when I knew,” he continued. She raised an eyebrow at him.
“Knew what?” she questioned, but she already knew the answer. She just liked it when he told her. He knew this and grinned.
“That’s when I knew I was in love with you,” he finished, and that was only the opening paragraph for their story.
